UPDATED GOAL SAFETY LAW INFORMATION (June 24, 2015)
On November 21, 2014, Governor Cuomo signed into law a bill that requires safety standards for movable soccer goals based on existing guidelines from the Federal Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
This law went into effect May 20, 2015. Regulations were published on June 3 incorporating the CPSC guidelines.
The WYSL is in the process of reviewing these new regulations and the guidelines. We expect to offer recommendations for clubs that want to conservatively adhere to the new regulations in time for the fall season.
As of now, the current requirement, which our referees will continue to follow, is that:
“All goals be securely anchored or counterweighted so as to prevent injury”
Please Note: Although not technically covered by the new law, we are recommending anchoring and/or counterweighting the new 5’ by 10’ “Bownet” goals being adopted this fall for our newly formatted U8 divisions.
Julian DiDonato, WYSL President
